Shetland Island Council approached us with a vital strategic project for the island community. They required a full turnkey temperature controlled storage facility to house Scalloway Fish Market whilst its existing home was redeveloped. The complex project required multiple visits to the Island and many options were discussed until the final solution was arrived at. Happily, our trips were always a pleasure, Shetland is a great place to visit.
The Temperature Controlled Building Solution
Due to environmental conditions, specifically high winds, a temporary aluminium A-framed building on the quay was discounted and a structure within a local existing warehouse was planned. It was required to maintain a 3 degree temperature for fish storage between sales and transportation.
A full specification for the building was written by the project consultants, Arch Henderson. An ideal warehouse was found with a large clear span area. We recommended building a modular steel framed “box” insulated with 50mm PIR panels within it. Designed carefully, this gave the largest internal floor plan possible.
Cooling would be supplied by 4 independent cooling systems, each comprising 80kw chiller and 50kw low-temperature air handling units (AHUS). A key advantage of stand alone systems is that there was no single point of failure. It was calculated that two systems would maintain the temperature without interruption.
With a limited 100A supply to the building generation was specified, again, for 100% redundancy, twin tandem running sets were specified.
This temporary cold store building rental project was built on time and on budget. At the time of writing this, the project has been on-going for 19 months.
No significant problems have been encountered, and to everyone’s surprise, even the porters who work the market like it, which we have been told is praise indeed (apparently they are very outspoken)
The customer commented “Shetland Islands Council needed to build a new fish market at Scalloway Harbour for the busy fishing industry, however, it could only be built on the same site as the original. This meant a temporary facility was required during the demolition and construction process. The temperature controlled envelope and chillers in the temporary market facility were completed on time and on budget. After completion of further environmental and food hygiene aspects, Shetland Islands Council now has a temporary fish market facility that will continue to serve the fishing industry and raise revenue for the Council, whilst the new fish market is built..”
