The Cold Storage Capacity Challenge
Our client’s problem was having enough space for their peak periods. Cold storage proved tricky to maintain in readiness for the limited six or seven weeks of the year when it was really needed. In this case, around Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Renting was ideal as it created the much needed additional cold storage capacity without all the costs associated with owning it. The client identified a suitable building containing three areas with a total of 17,000sq/ft that required temporary cooling to four degrees.
The Temporary Cooling Rental Solution;
Following a detailed survey of the site we proposed that two systems be installed with separate generators and chiller systems. The larger system comprised a 280kW chiller and three 50kW low-temperature air handling units (AHUs). The smaller area benefited from 2x80kW chillers, each serving a 50kW AHU. Both systems were installed with stand-alone power generation. Chilled water and 30% glycol-mix provided the cooling.
Our client avoided the capital outlay or depreciation costs that come from owning equipment. They paid for additional storage through fixed weekly payments that could fully offset against gross profit. We provided all servicing and breakdown response services within the contract too.
