The Cold Storage Rental Challenge;
Greenvale AP was forced to react to unusually high December temperatures when planning for their Christmas peak in demand. Success depended on additional cold storage space for potatoes at a constant 3 degrees. They contacted us for a short-term rental solution.
The Cold Room Storage Rental Solution
We proposed a temporary 200kw refrigeration system on an 8-week contract. It comprised 4x50kW low-temperature air handling units (AHUs) with electric defrost and control panels, a Trane ECGAN 212, 400kw hire chilled and a 250kVA generator with 1000lt bunded fuel tank.
A pressurised Glycol cooling loop was then used that ran through 10 Bar rubber suction and discharge hose. An expansion vessel was fitted to buffer and maintain the system pressure. This was manually filled and pressurised with a multi-stage pump with a 35% Ethylene Glycol mix.
These rental chillers have an integral pump fitted so straight-forward controls were used utilising signals provided by the master defrost controller for start and stop. The master and slaves were configured to defrost at the same time – ideal for a single loop chilled water system.
This cold storage system was fitted in under 6 hours for a relatively small investment. It provided seamless operation for 4 weeks maintaining the freshness of our clients’ potatoes in the run-up to the all-important festive period.
