The Chilled Storage Warehouse Challenge
Our client asked us to construct a temporary chilled building for a food packaging operation.
This meant offering a rapid solution for a new large chilled area within an existing warehouse. The area was to be used for chilled storage and packing of box meals.
We were given a very tight schedule of just three weeks to design and install the temporary chilled building required for our client to meet a vital contract start date. With this in mind, we proposed a quick-build structure and cooling system. We initially quoted for the quick set-up and 35 weeks’ operation with cost options for extension.
The Temporary Warehouse Cold Storage Solution;
After initial meetings and discussions, an insulated 25x100m aluminium structure was proposed with a 600kw glycol cooling system. Supplied flat packed, the building was assembled on-site. Superior insulation was achieved with 60mm PIR wall panels and an inflatable membrane roof. For rapid installation, a modular cooling system was fitted with 3 external glycol chillers and 10 internal 50kw low-temperature AHU rental units. A rubber hosing system with Camloc Connectors was used for glycol distribution. To ensure reliable operation of the chilled building three separate cooling systems were installed. In this way, the failure of any of the systems would not compromise the operation.
Despite the short notice, all the customer’s requirements were met and they were able to start operations on time. The project to date has been in operation for 3 months. Modifications have been made internally to the building with areas re-partitioned to suit ongoing needs. This is another key advantage to providing a temporary solution.
The client commented,
“All the requirements were met in full enabling Oakland International to execute our client’s requirements on time and within budget. We enjoyed working with the [Fast Cold Stores] cooling team and we would not hesitate in collaborating in the future should the requirement be, once again, placed at our door”
